I Guess I Knew It Was Coming

Stevie J fumbled an early ball. James Kelly didn’t get low enough for another one. Jimmy Bartel missed a goal. Everybody ran away from Paul Chapman.

Geelong seemed tired last night.

Ryan Bastinac was good in close. Jack Ziebell was kicking goals from everywhere. Aaron Edwards was swallowing everything. Harvey was running all over Geelong, all alone.

North Melbourne seemed wired last night.

Like so many things in life, there wasn’t one sole cause, but a number of contributing factors in The Cats loss to North Melbourne.

It’s not surprising that a team missing Varcoe, Wojack and Stokes looked a little slow; or that a defence missing Scarlett and Josh Hunt (not to mention a suddenly vitally important Andrew Mackie) looked a little loose; or that a team coming off a draining win, with 9 players of under 30 games experience, looked a little sloppy.

Defenders look bad when the ball is coming lace out and luck seems to run your way when you have more players running towards it. Geelong hasn’t had that many fumbles and skill errors since Hank Playfair was prominently involved. North’s pressure and effort were excellent.

And yet, with 10 minutes to go, down 6 goals, the Cats were still a massive chance. And they fought it out, no matter how tired they were and how futile it seemed.

It’s round 3, and to quote Denzel, this shit’s chess, not checkers.

There were shades of Playfair and Tenace running around on Sunday. Pods and Fatty made sure there weren't similar shades of Kent up forward but that's about it.

We were ordinary, and credit to Norf, who actually played very well. H & A losses to Norf don't bother me overly anyway, for two reasons - the "shinboner spirit" is a load of shit and they are toilet in finals; and I don't know any of their 16 remaining supporters, so don't cop any lip on a Monday morning.

I think the main problem was that whenever we had it, we were under heavy pressure or just fumbled it anyway. Whenever they had it, they had half an hour to choose which of their 7 free blokes they'd kick it to. Just a byproduct of the personnel out there on the day. That many newbies playing together will never be able to cover for all the first choice players that were out.

I still think that our best footy is the best going around. It's good that the newbies got a taste but hopefully not so many of them at once next time.

By the way, who's Fatty??

Our skills and effort were down, but what do you expect? We just came off a big game with the Hawks and left nothing on the park, but against North, who we don't have a beef with, and who were keen to test themselves against the champs, we just couldn't get up for it.

Agree with Atilla - not overly unhappy with the loss.

"And here's Corey McKernan to present the round 3 trophy for 2012!"

Yep a lot of youth out on the ground, but good signs. The seniors will instill the hardness throughout the year and we can look forward to the young guys stepping up as the season progresses. I came away positive from that game.

Just quietly gents, I'm on the Stringer bandwagon. Our next player to come through the ranks & dominate. Looked good in the last quarter last week. My other project player is George Burberry. Get around him!

6 goals to Fatty Hawkins and 9 to Brown in the VFL - what the fuck is going on?

Oh, and like me, Stevie J clearly had money on the Cats under 39.5 as he gifted the Lions a couple at the end there. Thanks Stevie!

Hatchet leading the Coleman,
Shan Shan chasing the Liston,
Scarlo back in the team and Wojo, dare I say it Chappy back in form,Wojo, Varcoe and Menzel not too far away.

Then at the "G", a cunt reached 500 goals. It's been a big weekend.

Why are we so undisciplined this season?! Can we not go one week without giving away cheap 50m penalties and someone getting reported?

Selwood gone.
