Thoroughly enjoyed the win on Friday, but still got to keep it in perspective - I think the Pies result is much more telling of where we are at compared to the Bombers. But beat the Crows (albeit at Skilled) on the weekend and I will move much more towards the tightness in the trousers end of the spectrum.

Great showing from the younger brigade though - arguably Fletch's best performance for the club and handy stuff from Mad Dog and a few others.

Credit to Stevie J (or "The Reason [for Geelong's success]" as he apparently, and awesomely, refers to himself) as well - he has been moved out of a pure goal kicking role and his doing some of his best work. Hopefully his groin injury isn't serious.

I also liked the use of Chappy as a forward - he's a good mark, a great kick, and a white line fever psycho - all great attributes for a forward.

How about I quote douchebag Age journo Jake Niall:

"Geelong's opening quarter was quite possibly the most exhilarating and complete half hour of football by any team this season. It was Roger Federer-esque and it is certainly difficult to conceive of any team producing better football."

Thanks Jake, that about sums it up. Say hi from me to the great Geelong motivational speaker, Robert Walls when you see him.

I am not lying when I say tha one of the guys I went to the game with last night teared up as Tommy's kick sailed through after the siren.

The Whorethorn fans will bitch about the no-HTB call from the Rioli tackle, whilst ignoring the armchair ride they got from the umps all night. I hope that dirty rug wearing sniper Guerra gets plenty of weeks for his work.

There wouldn't be a team in the land who wouldn't be shitting themselves at the prospect of facing this team in the finals.

How was the Chappy incident different to Ziebell? From the stands I automatically assumed Guerra was fucked. Maybe the MRP are all Channel 7 commentators.

PS: Any danger of Wojo returning & when's Varcoe meant to be back?

B Man, my info on Wojo is that he will play in Perth and Varcoe will play in the VFL in 1-2 weeks. Vardy will play in the round 22 'bye' against the Doggies.

Trades for Boak: Byrnes, Hogan anyone care to add a few more candidates?

Captain, it's not like there is nothing to write about. Get out of your mid season funk and step up for the faithful.

Assuming Boak is back on the Geelong line of thinking, our remaining Ablett pick is one obvious candidate, with a player as well. Boak is a good player, so we would have to give up something decent. I remember being dark when we coughed up Maloney as part of the Ottens trade, but that paid off in spades.

I wonder if Horlin-Smith might be a candidate - as he has shown he can play, and is an SA native.

Menzel is also from SA, but if they even think about trading him then I will get my gun...

you think were dirty on them sending Moloney to Melbourne, imagine how pissed off he was - sent to a basketcase club, never to play finals while you watch your mates win three premierships!

Any sucker sent to Alberton, or drafted by the pick that was sent there would have to be seriously disappointed too. Port are a mess on and off the field and look like staying that way for the foreseeable future. The only good thing they have going for them is Buddha Hocking, and I don't think he's allowed to pull in the boots and do a bit of captain/coach work.

what the fuck is it with these match review panel monkeys and their vendetta against Geelong?

Last week Guerra pulls a couple of moves out of the WWE playbook and walks away with a pat on his formerly bald head, this week Joel gets points for telling his shitbag brother that if he hits him to make it count (and gives him a shove to go on with)

Did a few of them get the Hawks for premiers at particularly generous odds pre-season and are worried the Cats might get in the way?

Gents (and Catain if you're out there, somewhere),

I haven't watched Boak play, is he worth having? Where would he fit in our best 22, and who would make way for him?

Captain, got writer's block?
Here's some topics that I wouldn't mind getting your thoughts on:
How good is Fletch?
Is Bundy the black Joel Sellwood?
Will Varcoe have an impact?
Have you noticed some promising signs from Murdoch?
TOMM-A-HAWK?
Is Cloke a weak cunt and is his son Travis any better?
Do we need/would we like Boak?
What is he worth?

That ought to do for a start.

Its hard to get a read on Boak. He won the World's Tallest Dwarf/Leper with the Most Fingers Award last year (i.e. Port B&F) but he hasn't shone among dross they way that say Ablett has shone among the Gold Coast kiddies Though to be fair there are not many players that could compare closely to Moneybags.

He can definitely play, and he is a great age and player type to fit into our midfield - having someone alongside Selwood who is even 2/3 the player that Joel is would be a great result.

But Port are going to play hardball - even more so after the high profile chasing of Boak by Geelong. Its unlikely they will take the nuclear option as they did with Nick Stevens, but it may be that another Victorian club does trump any offer we make.

Supplemental question for BLLLers:

Given that the Cats have bred arguably the best (certainly the most decorated) tagger that the game has ever seen (Lingy), can we discuss some natural advantages/disadvantages that heir apparent Taylor Hunt has and where the potential covering for/equaling/superseding of the great blood-nut will come from.

Amazing that the Cats have gone 8-3 since the mid year break and equally amazing that the Captain has knocked out one blog post and a Pacino movie clip in the same period.

Captain please get the hunger, stop going to weddings every week or pilgrimages to Kenya or whatever has stopped you from tapping out content for this great little blog. Our beloved Cats are a tad frisky in September and the BLLL faithful need their skipper to guide them through the finals.

...fustercluck...

1:07 pm
Anonymous attila said...

Amen - The Captain is doing a "reverse-Ottens" and going missing in September.

Great game against the Swans. The Swans did their best to ruin the game as a spectacle by having two players outside our forward 50, but it bit them on the arse when they did attack and watched helplessly as all their long bombs were picked off by Harry Taylor.

Plus a few Cats seem to suffer from some bizarre form of hayfever in Spring. Rather than give you the sniffles, it turns you into a contested ball winning tackling machine (see Kelly J, Selwood, J, Bartel, J, Corey, J etc).

Bring on Freo. It will be another disgraceful Lyon defensive bore fest but we should take the chocolates (barring any MRP bullshit rubbing out Chappy, Selwood and/or Stevie J of course).

It's just our senior blokes deciding to fire up gents. Best senior core out of any side in the comp. Easily!

Good opposition this week but it won't matter. The midfield will bash them & the backline will rebound everything.

Ballantyne will need someone to draw him a picture of a Sherrin to remind him what it looks like.

Hawkins will go close to breaking the marking world record with no Mcpharlin. Unless of course big Hazza beats him to it.

The B Man.

1:06 pm
Anonymous attila said...

On the flip side, if we are down by plenty in the final quarter, and its Scarlo's last game, I wouldn't want to be Hayden Ballantyne at that moment...

The Stevie J thing is BS. Adding to the BS, but actually better for us, is that he got away with exactly the same thing that Selwood got pinged for. In one respect it was worse, as Selwood's was an instinctive reaction to an attempted hit by his brother, whereas Johnson's was a instinctive reaction to realising he might get rubbed out for knocking a bloke over.

No McPharlin is a great result for us. Much like Scarlett (when he can be bothered) he appears to be their backline 'general' as well as being a big defender. With him gone and Hawk currently playing like a man possessed it could get ugly down there.

How does a rotating forward line of Hawk, Pods, West and Vardy sound to y'all. Sounds like Christmas in September to me.

Time to put your superman cape on again Pav - the Cats want something to hold on to as they ride you like a pony.

2:13 pm

Agreed Attila,
it's a good time to have a large bodied, strong marking forward setup, the Hoax with Shoenmakers and Gibson are very gettable as is the Pies with Ben Reid soon to be in his best Achilles Heel form circa 2011.

Looks like a Geel vs Hawks prelim if we are good enough, then to an Adelaide GF that will see us with mulleted premiership bookends from the 2007-2012 Age of Awesome.

I may just jizz myself if that one gets up.

Yes!!!

Just scored 2 tickets in MCC Members for the game tonight, taking Mrs Fuster so she can punch random Freo supporters instead of me when and if it gets too close in the latter stages of the match.

Oh and she can punch.....if only Ross Lyon would spill Diet Coke on her, my life would be complete.

For the record, we are easily good enough to put 6 goals into these Dockers, and for Basso's sake I hope we do exactly that.

Well, shit.

Outplayed in a final - by the dockers of all people. Typical - one of our first tough games in recent times that I go to in a pretty optimistic mood, and we fall over.

Time to get around the VFL team gents - they knocked over the less poo and wee team yesterday and are now in a prelim against Werribee.

Dawson Simpson is enormous, but moves like a brontosaurus. "Brad" Orren is a really good VFL ruckmen. AFL, not so much. Brown and Walker looked good though, as Horlin-Smith. The star was Kersten though - five goals in tough, windy conditions. Expect to see a lot more of him in the seniors next year, hopefull playing next to a healthy Menzel.

The obituaries for our "era" were written (again) as soon as the final siren went against the Dockers. Did 2010/2011 teach these clowns nothing?

9:34 am
Anonymous attila said...

To continue the theme, despite almost coughing up an 8 goal lead, the VFL Cats did beat Werribee and now face Port Melbourne in the Grand Final on Sunday.

The VFL winning teams of 2002 and 2007 (2002 especially) contained the nucleus of our AFL teams that went on to dominate from 2007 onwards - fingers crossed some of the current crop can do the same.

Who do we want to win the flag now boys? Obviously not the Hoax, and watching Buckley fail would be amusing. But Goodes and the entire Sydney game style give me the shits. As does "Kirky" and I don't care that he doesn't even play for them any more. That leaves Adelaide, who I don't hate, but know too many Crows fans to want to see them win.

People, we all want Adelaide to win by default.

1. Hawthorn I hate the most, even compared to Collingwood. No exceptions. Ever.
2. Sydney is the 2nd worst. Bunch of defensive, boring pricks.
3. Collingwood is next because they're Collingwood. They've done remarkably well to get this low on the list.
4. That leaves Adelaide as my premiership hopeful, not because I particularly like them but purely by default. Even with Tex fucking Walker & his mullet I still have to go for them.

The B man.

2:29 pm
Anonymous fustercluck said...

So B man, you are now on the Swans?

Hell why not, lets get a Premiership for the big Mummy, to make up for the flags that were stolen from him by Mark Blake and Mark Thompson.

Anyone else think that the Hoax had a couple of extra players on the ground last night? they were very lucky to beat the Crows. I'll be glad when it's all over and trade week/draft/pre-season kicks in.

Despite probably not having a Cats blog to read, I look forward to season 2013.

watch for:
1) the Cats picking up Troy Menzel in the draft using their best smoke and mirrors to convince the other 17 clubs that he is a risky proposition.
2)The Cats to have a decent crack at a big name player in the trade period, once the Pies and Blues spend 4 days fucking about with the Cloke fiasco.

Yep I'm on the Swans. Buddy to kick none & Mike Sheahan to cry about it.

Good idea to go after Menzel. Can't have enough of them on your list I reckon, particularly as Daniel will soon be the best player in the comp.

Don't know which big name they'll potentially get but there's a few things I'm hoping for in the off season:

1. Hogan to work on & improve his disposal. We need some youthful, inside grunt. Duncan has 50 games now but still looks like an outside runner to me. We need some youth to step up & join Corey, Kelly & Selwood as a tough man. I think Hogan can do it but he can't kick for shit & needs to be cleaner.

2. Lonergan is an adequate player sometimes but panics when 1 on 1 as shown with his shitful "perfomance" against Pavlich. Good defenders can god forbid - actually defend without their mates coming in to help out. Hopefully he learns to hold himself together in 1 on 1 contests, as he will now need to be a main man without Scarlo.

3. Motlop to not do anymore soft mincing queen, fairy, homo, gay one handed efforts or toe pokes.

PS: Anybody have any other candidates for the next tough inside midfielder?

The B Man.

I think Simon Hogan retired (http://www.geelongcats.com.au/geelongnews/newsarticle/tabid/3933/newsid/148331/default.aspx)so we'll have to look elsewhere for the elusive in and under grunt.

Well that escalated quickly. The trade period over the last few years has generally been a question of "which fringe players will get picked off" - this year we are grabbing players like a drunk girl at Motel.

Welcome aboard Rivers and McIntosh. I have a sneaking suspicion that Rivers will never rise above "solid" and that McIntosh will be injured for huge stretches of the year, but am content to live in hope.

3:10 pm
Anonymous Chookpimp said...

Rivers certainly isn't going to replace Scarlett, but no-one is. If the rest of the Geelong back six can make Lonergan into a serviceable back man, there's hope yet he'll be adequate. He's certainly had enough practice at defending considering how much time the ball spends in Melbournes back half.

McIntosh needs to grow his hair, start belting blokes and developing a case of the yips and he can be like the last ruck/forward we got off Norf.

We've snagged a couple of decent cast offs from Arden st - Pickering was a handy pick up... Until he negotiated for Ablett to fuck off to GCS anyway.

What's the deal with Caddy(shack). Everyone wanted to take him to the prom, is he going to put out for us or is he just a giant tease?

9:43 pm
Anonymous attila said...

Good point - though I just hope that McIntosh is more in the Mooney mould of ex-Norf, rather than the Kant Kicksley mould.

The Caddy thing is weird - he clearly showed a bit (and kicked 3 against us I think) but managed 17th in their B&F. Though with the Suns, different parts of Ablett probably took up the 1st to 6th spots anyway.

Plus, we have a Jared again - does he have to change his name to Max?

I miss Max Rooke in the hoops. Watching him chew flies with his headphones on upside down whilst pretending to be an assistant coach just isn't the same thing.
