He loves us, he loves us not

While Mrs Watson and I toil away at our up-coming season preview, I thought I’d take the chance to add my two cents to the over-flowing and diseased water fountain that is this most annoying of issues. And I've seen it all before.

Countless times in American sports I've watched a player get drafted, build a career with his original team and when his contract is up, he’s faced with a choice: (significantly) more money somewhere else, or the on-going comraderie of team-mates, the continued love of fans, the comfort of an established home base and the probability of more team success. And you know what 95% of players choose? Yep, the money. And that 5% is only there as my margin for error; I can’t actually recall one player giving the “home team discount”.

Now, is Australia’s culture different to that of the USA’s? No doubt, but we’re getting closer. Teams are doing pre-season training at high-altitude, players are crying after games [and spooning. Justin Koschitzke, I'm looking in your direction. - Mrs Watson] and clubs are employing full-time leadership consultants and psychologists. We’re about two years away from a “Some Kind of Monster” type documentary that follows the trials and tribulations of Matthew Knights, Jobe Watson and the Essendon leadership group as a clingy therapist clumsily takes part in handball drills and pleads his case for a spot in the forward pocket. But I digress.

Ablett, despite the heritage, has never struck me as particularly loyal, or connected to Geelong. Neither did his old man, for that matter. If, for example, GC17 came sniffing around Cameron Ling’s backdoor we would not be having this conversation: Ling would captain Geelong for $12.50 an hour and a Lamby’s VIP card. But Ablett? He seems aloof enough to be able to walk away from Geelong with a completely clear conscience.

Now, on top of this, throw in these facts: At Geelong he has won two premierships, a club best & fairest, two AFL MVP awards, countless All-Australian selections and a Brownlow medal. In other words, he's done more than enough for the club and has nothing left to achieve in Geelong.

On the Gold Coast, being a much quieter AFL market than Melbourne, the reclusive Gary Jnr would be left alone to shop, surf and eventually appear in “Underbelly 8: Gold Coast Bikini Party”.

And did I mention his family lives there? That’s right, not only does Gaz Senior, aka God, now live up there, but his nut-job brother signed there in what Ari Gold would call a “family deal”. (Speaking of Entourage, I think we should refer to Nathan Ablett as Johnny Drama from now on.)

So, to recap: An aloof, recently single, media-shy star with nothing left to prove and no family connections left in Geelong has the chance to play with his brother, live in anonymity and spend his spare days on some of the world’s best beaches in 25 degree weather.

Oh, and the Gold Coast can pay him twice as much as Geelong (legally) can.

So long, Gary, we’ll always have Paris.

Captain, If your prophecy comes true then I look forward to seeing if Lingy can take him down, as he has taken Voss, Buckley, Judd and others.
I hope that you under-estimate Jnrs drive to succeed. I hope a lot of stuff actually.

I wonder, who would be the biggest loss, Gazza or Selwo.

Selwo is younger, perhaps even better as a pure midfielder, when you take their respective ages into account. A guaranteed captain before he is 25 and a likely brownlow medalist, a durable 250 game player.

Gazza is Gazza, the best player in the AFL, with 2 flags, 3 MVPs, All Australian etc. at his current rate he is future Hall of Fame material. Potentially a 60 goal a season key forward in his 30s when the midfield zip has gone.

If we are living in the now, I would have Selwo, purely because of where he is in his development at 21-22yrs old.

If I ignore the romance of it, forget that he was big Gazzas kid, the first time I saw Gary Jnr play, I would probably have said, "gee that young Ablett is not bad, is he".

Watching Joel Selwood in his early games, you absolutely knew that he was going to be a gun. His football brain was already approaching elite at 18. That was well before the ultra winning enviromment he was lucky enough to be involved in had a chance to have any great influence on him. Since then his improvement has been constant. If he can add scoring ability to his repertoire, he is the full package.

What is realy shitty is the Cats are a built from scratch, dual premiership team.

No draft concessions, no tanked priority picks no number 1 draft picks. Built from fucking nothing. What do we get as compensation for our best players? Pick 17?

There is another scenario, they could both go interstate. Sheedy would love Selwo, he is Kev's kind of footballer.

Then we is fucked baby!!!

We did have a few draft concessions in the form of father son picks, but I agree with your post.

Jnr leaving would obviously suck balls, but if I had to choose, I would take Selwood over Jnr.

The idea of Jnr doing a shimmy past Bartel and streaking inside 50 to kick a goal for GC does make me want to cry a little bit though.

Attilla, what about the thought of Jnr trying to exit defensive 50 for GC and meeting up with Max Rooke?

We will love him wherever he is won't we? I think the idea of having to hate him may be worse than losing him, he is inspirational for plenty of other clubs supporters, not just ours. Just like his Dad in that respect.

Fuster, if you leave Geelong for cash, then meeting the Manimal on your way out the defensive 50 (or the Kardina Park carpark) is your destiny.

Look what happened to Colbert - karma came to him in the form of his own teammate...

So now we've decided he's gone, whose number do I put on my 5 yr old's new jumper? She has 29 on her old one and is adamant that it should be replicated on the new one...... I'm seriously leaning towards the number whose wearer will NEVER EVER leave Geelong, even if GC offers him $3,000,000, who is consistent, always gives 100%, who irks opposition players and supporters and who would be the life of the party at any party. That number: 1/2. Might change my own jummper too. Half Cat for me in 2010.

I don't think there's much chance of GC17 "sniffing around Cameron Ling's backdoor", but it's a funny line nonetheless.

It's a shame that this whole year is going to be just like the NBA with James & Cleveland, and the media circus no doubt forgetting that there's still a season of Judas, err, Junior still playing for the Cats.

Then again, apparently we're not rated above St Kilda, Collingwood or the Bulldogs, so if you believe the press, we're no chance with or without Ablett.

Capt:- Who do you think best qualifies for the following statement in the AFL....with the exception of the soon-to-be expansion clubs.

"The 2010 Bucks are like the island in "Lost" -- you never know who will show up next or who might be brought back from the dead."

Dogs, Saints or Freo?
