Faith/Void

If we’re being honest, if we’re going to attempt impartiality, if we’re going off recent form and stats and player availability and finals history, or even just applying the “whiff test”, then Geelong has little chance to win Friday night’s Prelim Final. But this isn't problematic for Geelong, it’s therapeutic.

As this season more than any other has shown us, the gap between Geelong’s best and worst appears to be largely a mental one. With not much to play for The Cats often cruise through long periods of matches, producing 20 or so minutes of devastating football when they have to (see their third quarter record this year), before putting the cue back in the rack again. This is as frustrating as it is promising; if they’re down you never count them out, you just wonder why they’re down there in the first place.

Rightfully, every man and his dog are saying this is the best chance Hawthorn will get to knock the Geelong monkey off their back. And The Hawks are doing a lot of talking about exactly that this week. They've talked about the preparation they've had, about the 10 weeks of research they've put into Geelong, about how they need to do something different, about how the past doesn't matter and about how the past can’t be ignored. But what they’re saying isn't really that important, it’s that they’re saying so much of it. They haven’t been thinking about this game for two weeks, they've been thinking about it for five years.

The memory of past success steels self belief. It is what has made Geelong’s eleven-match winning streak over Hawthorn possible. It’s what made last week’s third quarter blast against Port Adelaide probable. Geelong will go into this match with the clear conscience of an underdog and the quiet confidence of a champion that habitually beats another team for no reason other than they simply don’t like losing to them.

Similarly, the memory of past failures, of falling at the same hurdle time and again, can instill doubt and hesitation and breed bad habits. Hawthorn will go in to this game the red-hot favourite, with a healthy list, a week’s rest and a convincing victory over Sydney behind them. They will also carry with them the burden of five years of expectation as well as that of their own minds.

Bad habits are never really broken; they’re just replaced. Good habits? We don’t change those at all.

Well Captain, the Cats have gotten off to a good start at the selection table, if Hawkins is fit that is. And if he isn't, and they play him and don't pull the trigger on the Kerstenator, who is named as an emergency, then impartially, the Cats deserve what the Hawks might just do to them as a result. If we play to our ability, we are 2-5 goals better than the old Hoax we're too quick on the outside and out of the back half.

I went in thinking we were more likely to lose than win, which made for less anxious moments - but annoyingly at 3/4 time, whilst taking a slash specifically, I allowed myself to actually think "holy shit, it looks like we are actually going to win this".

Then it all went wrong - River's Melbourne bred spudness surfaced, and Duncan made a couple of crucial errors. So close, yet so far. The game was lost two weeks ago I think - without the week off we ended up running out of legs against the Hoax.

The big positives were the performance of Guthrie and Caddy in particular.

Guthrie could never "replace" a champion like Enright, but he looks like he might give it a red hot go.

Hey Attila, I'm a big fan of Guthrie, having had the chance to see more games in person this year, I'd have him in front of where Enright was as a 21 year old. Whether he is able to take it to anywhere near the same level, remains to be seen.

A lot of ink in the papers about Chapman, I would give him another year in the hope that he could manage 15 games plus finals as a small forward having the odd run in the midfield. I can see Corey, Hunt and maybe J-Pod being retired.

Fuck it. Don't like this Chapman move one bit. He's only 31 and is still awesome. Youth policy taken too far.

Agreed, he was offered only 8 games next year. Damn shame really, we still need that toughness around the ball that he brings.

Especially as all our toughness is still provided by Bomber's blokes. Way too much reliance on ball transfer these days & they willingly sack a bloke who can win his own ball. Corey will go too. Still waiting to see which young guy will step up to give A grade hardness but no indication who that will be yet. Christensen is the only youngish player that's any good in a pack. Caddy's ok but he was head hunted from elsewhere. Hopefully Horlin Smith becomes permanent.

Happy new year fellow BLLLers, who is going tonight? I'm making the 5 and a half hour round trip by road, full of nerves though. The Cats need a good start, with a challenging first half draw and an injury list that would make 'Weary' Dunlop throw his hands in the air, can the Cats overcome the odds and compete?

Are we going to beat Shitthorn this week?

B Man, if we bring the physical pressure, we are a chance. A small chance. The Cats seem to have improved quite a bit this year when they don't have the ball, the tackling has been fantastic and disciplined. But to date we have beaten spazzies. Hawthorn look polished and potent, helped out by the Sydney recruiters as well. Lonergan is going to have to find a new bunny from somewhere. We can't afford to have Mackie out.

Lonergan can team up with Taylor to make a mess out of Rough & Hale when he goes forward. I don't think Shitthorn will bomb it in this time & will try to hit leading targets instead. Therefore, will need to win the midfield battle. We have enough class to take them down. Gunston will be the biggest forward threat but Rivers can take him if Mackie's not there.

So, B Man, we have established that there are at least 2 people reading this Ghost of Season's Past. I have a few questions for yourself or anyone else reading. 1. How is the Captain, is he well, is everything going ok for him? Does anyone know why he has dropped off the map? 2. Guthrie. Love? Like? Why? 3. Is it just me or is the apparent demise of Sydney just heart-warming? 4. Objectively as possible, how far can the Cats go this season, what will it take for us to be contenders, what will stop us in our tracks?

...fustercluck...

1. Not sure about the captain. Had a great blog once upon a time. Hopefully we see some more gold very soon.

2. Like. My criteria as an armchair critic is hardness & skill. For me to love someone they need top marks in both. That's why I'm not completely over the line with Motlop for example. He's fantastic at one of those. Guthrie is a pretty good player. My man George, I love. You just watch what he will turn into.

3. The Sydney thing is sensational. Going back to my criteria, they've always been structured & disciplined but as for classiness they're a pack of blue collar scrubbers. The great teams have stacks of blue & white collar. Not sure how they got their flags although I was going for them against the scummery in 2012.

4. We have the firepower with everyone fit & firing at the business end of the season. Potential weaknesses could be lack of an awesome 2nd tall next to Hawk. Not sure Brown will cut it. The other one is our ability to change the game if it's played on the opposition's terms. 2008 GF & both Freo finals we had a crowded forward line & they had hectares. We couldn't change the game up didn't look like scoring despite pumping it in relentlessly. Pavlich raped Lonergan by isolating him. He needs his mates around him in a pack but wobbly by himself. Could solve the forward line problem by chipping to chf & drilling it from 60. Then we'll see how long all 18 of Ross Lyon's boring pricks sit inside the 50. We don't have anyone with that distance in their legs though.

Woohoo!! Huge game. Any upgrade to love for the 21year old in Gazzas jumper? I'm at infatuation, bordering on man lust. He was hard and polished today. Rivers was great, as was McIntosh plus the usual suspects.

Good to see there's still a pulse here! Thanks to you two for pulling out the de-fib machine ... somebody needs to resuscitate the Captain!
Awesome win yesterday. Like many, I held only a small hope against the Whoreks; however think that the Hinkley-led Port may give a better account this Sunday. They will have two extra days recovery while our boys will be sore from yesterday's bruising encounter.
I'm feeling the love for Woody and also have huge respect for GH-S. We're building a strong list of players to rotate through the mid-field and still have Bundy and Mots to come back in. Caddy will be fired up when he returns midseason and Schroeder is still in the wings! Good to see our big blokes dominating at the moment ... Simpson, H-Mac and a finally fit Hawky being let off the leash! If we can finish top 4with a near-full list ... we can win this!

Good to hear from you Basso, how are those Freo fans? I've lost a lot of sleep wondering if they are doing ok, sitting front-row-centre watching the polished turd go through the motions each week, that would be edge of your seat stuff that would.

Perhaps it's fitting that the death of this blog coincides with the end of the magical ride over the last 7 years. Just a thought.

End of the magical ride....maybe not? Roll Freo convincingly at the Cattery, Do the Hawks in R22, who knows? It's not that far fetched.

By my recollection, we are in better shape, in terms of having our best 22 on the park and in good shape, than in 2009. In 2011 we were written off, made it deep into the season in a good position, R22 we met overwhelming flag favourites Collingwood, asshatted them. 4 weeks later, we asshatted the them a little more.

Writing the Cats off while they have a core of legends and an enviable young support cast, is a bit like trusting Russia. Probably not a good idea.

Fingers crossed.
